Fillings & Sealants
Fillings & Sealants
Treating a cavity does not have to be a dreaded experience. With the gentle touch of Dr. Pitner, we can seal teeth to help prevent the need for a filling.
What is a filling?
Fillings are used when a tooth has caries or more commonly known as a cavity. No one likes to hear they have a cavity. However, the ability to restore the tooth is a relatively simple process. Composite resins, which are the color of the tooth, can be used as fillings for small to medium sized cavities and are hidden from view.
What is a sealant?
Regular brushing and flossing alongside professional hygiene treatment can help you avoid the news of hearing you have a cavity. But did you know, there is more that can be done to protect your teeth from cavities through dental sealants? Applying a sealant is a quick and painless procedure where a gel is "painted" on the teeth and then hardened with a special light. Dental sealant can protect your teeth from acids from food particles and bacteria that lead to cavities. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control says dental sealants can decrease tooth decay nearly 80% for the first 2 years after application and up to 50% for an additional 2 years. Although they can help patients of any age, dental sealants are highly recommended for school aged children at the time their molars come in.
